Field Trip

On Friday, November 5, 2010 we will take a field trip to see a musical group at the Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  We will leave school at 10:00 and return at 1:00. The group is Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. This group includes two harps, one vihuela, one guitar, one guitarron, two trumpets, and six violins. They are recognized as the greatest mariachi in the world. If you receive free or reduced lunch, a bag lunch will be provided for you. Otherwise please bring a lunch from home. We will not need any volunteers for this field trip. This field trip costs $2.00. Please send in the money by Wednesday, November 3

Book Fair

Our school's Book Fair will be on Wednesday, November 3, from 4:30-6:30. We would like to invite you and everyone you know to visit our event. There will be a great selection of books and fun items at the fair. We will also have literacy workshops and special read alouds beginning at 5:00. Visit all of our literacy stations for your chance to be entered into a raffle for a free gift. Get a jump on the holidays and start your shopping here!

Uniform

I have been pleased to see so many students dressed neatly and appropriately for school each day. However, please remember that uniform colors for bottoms are black or khaki, not navy blue. Socks for both boys and girls need to be solid black, white, or red. Also, shirts for both boys and girls need to be tucked in at all times.
Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life.

Students will bring in a baby picture of themselves to school to share with the class.

Tuesday - Sock it to Drugs

Wednesday - Hats off to Saying No to Violence

Thursday - Team Up Against Drugs

Summer Reading Club

If you still have any Summer Reading Club books, please send them to school with your student. All books should be returned in the bag your student brought them home in. Thank you to the families who have returned their students' books already.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you so much to all the families who have donated classroom supplies and snacks. My students and I appreciate any and all donations you are able to give.

Exhibition Folder

Your student received a purple Exhibition folder today. This folder should stay in his book bag and will be used for any materials needed for Exhibition. This includes holding research materials for his Interest Project and Milestone papers.

Today, I sent a note detailing the Milestones and due dates, and the first Milestone. The first Milestone is due Thursday, October 21. Students need to find at least 3 resources to use for their Interest Projects. Resources should include books, reliable websites or interview sources, and/or informational movie/video clips. Students need to write their resources on the Resource Milestone page and turn it in on October 21. Each Milestone is worth a portion of the Exhibition score. Failure to turn in a Milestone will result in a zero for that Milestone.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Homework

Students have Math and Reading homework each night, Monday through Thursday. Every student needs to read for at least 20 minutes and complete the Reading Log in the Take Home Folder. There is also a Math Home Link each of those nights.

Last month, I had several parents ask me when homework would be assigned. It has been assigned nightly for 3 weeks now and I am getting 50% or less returned each morning. Please work with me so your students know homework is part of their job as a student. This includes not giving them excuses for incomplete homework or allowing them to give me excuses. I know that by working together we can improve this situation.
